In 1982 the Florida Keys declared themselves independent under the name "The Conch Republic." This lasted two minutes. It was in response to Border Patrol setting up a checkpoint at the point of entry to the Keys and it hurting the tourism business. When the federal government wouldn't respond they declared themselves a sovereign nation.
