The Oba's (Benin royalty) would domesticate leopards to demonstrate their mastery over the wilderness,and many of the famous Benin bronzes include leopard motifs. This particular piece is an aquamanile, which is a jug that holds water for washing the Oba's hands for the Ugie Erha Oba, a ceremony that honors his deceased father.
